Serosurveillance for double infection with Pseudomonas pseudomallei in tuberculous patients.

چکیده
The serosensitivity to Pseudomonas pseudomallei antigen in pulmonary tuberculous patients was surveyed in Ubon Ratchathani Province, a melioidosis-endemic and tuberculosis-prevalent area in Thailand. Indirect hemagglutination assay (IHA) and indirect immunofluorescent assay (IFA) for IgM and IgG were employed for the measurement of antibody levels, with cut-off points set at 1:160, 1:8, and 1:32, respectively. Retrospective protocol survey of clinical data was also conducted. From these studies, however, no evidence was obtained to show that tuberculous patients have a disposition to acquire double-infected with P. pseudomallei and to develop melioidosis. The serosensitivity was never higher than that of the general population of the province as represented by healthy blood donors, nor related with the clinical severeness. Tuberculosis and melioidosis appear to be mutually independent diseases without showing interrelated prevalence in the endemic area.

Pseudomonas pseudomallei infection from drowning: the first reported case in Taiwan.
We report a case of Pseudomonas pseudomallei infection, in which the patient acquired the bacteria by aspiration of river water after a drowning incident near Manila, the Philippines. The pulmonary form of melioidosis was noted at the onset, but septicemia developed at a later stage. Positive blood cultures were obtained 17 days after the accident. The patient was treated successfully with a co...
متن کاملInteraction of insulin with Pseudomonas pseudomallei.
Pseudomonas pseudomallei is the causative agent of melioidosis, a disease being increasingly recognized as an important cause of morbidity and mortality in many regions of the world. An intriguing observation regarding melioidosis is that a significant percentage of patients who develop the disease have preexisting diabetes mellitus. In this regard, we have tested the hypothesis that insulin ma...

Background: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a severe form of extra pulmonary tuberculosis with high mortality and morbidity rate in all age group patients specific in adults and children. The incidence and prevalence are not exactly known in Iran. In this study, we tried to evaluate the role of rapid diagnosis and to find out the highest risk group patients. Methods:Totally,...
متن کاملCharacterization of the capsular polysaccharide of Burkholderia (Pseudomonas) pseudomallei 304b.
Burkholderia (Pseudomonas) pseudomallei is the causative agent of melioidosis, a bacterial infection of considerable morbidity in areas of endemicity of Southeast Asia and northern Australia. Clinical isolates of B. pseudomallei have been demonstrated to produce a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) containing two separate and chemically distinct antigenic O polysaccharides against which infected patients...
متن کاملCross-reaction to Legionella pneumophila antigen in sera with elevated titers to Pseudomonas pseudomallei.
A significantly greater incidence (P less than 0.005) of Legionella pneumophila microagglutination titers greater than or equal to 32 was found in sera with elevated titers to Pseudomonas pseudomallei as compared with sera with negative titers for P. pseudomallei antibodies. The greater incidence of L. pneumophila titers in these sera suggests that L. pneumophila and P. pseudomallei share an an...
